Workshops

Description

  • The workshops are essentially seminars, or more precisely group discussion around a manuscript in its final stages of preparation (paper, book section). The manuscript can be from a member, a graduate student, or a guest speaker.
  • The paper is available at least 10 days before the workshop. Interested persons only need to contact the research coordinator of the RCSCS in ordrer to obtain the paper.
  • At the beginning of the workshop, the author briefly presents the objectives and the context of the paper (5 minutes).
  • A designated discussant presents a brief comment of the manuscript. The comment is formatted to generate a debate.
  • The author provides a first answer to the comments of the discussant.
  • The group discussion then follows.
  • Only those who have read the manuscript are invited to enter the discussion.
  • The seminar lasts approximately 90 minutes.
  • There is roughly one seminar per month (between September and May).

Rationale

  • Foster the intellectual life of the Centre.
  • Provide researchers with support in the final preparation of
    manuscripts for publication.
  • Provide an additional opportunity of education for graduate students.
  • Incite the development of collaborative projects.
Workshop Organizer (2011-2012) Christine Dallaire

Student workshops

Description

In 2009-2010, the RCSCS introduced a new Student Workshop series specifically for graduate students. This series is organized by Bonita Gracey, PhD student at the School of Human Kinetics and RCSCS Scholarship holder. This student-focused workshop series is modelled on the workshops organized by the RCSCS since 2002. The hope is that with a workshop specifically by and for students, everyone will feel more comfortable in participating in all ways.

Student Workshops can be an opportunity for graduate students to receive feedback on their work and offer them practice in preparing, explaining, and defending their work before bringing it to more formal venues. It also provides another opportunity for more interaction among students, allowing more possibilities for shared academic interests and mutual projects. This is intended as a structured but casual event with a an open atmosphere.

Process

The paper submitted by a graduate students is forwarded to prospective participants for them to read before the workshop. During the workshops, participants formulate questions, comments, and suggestions on the student’s work. Therefore, the point of a student workshop is NOT to give students an opportunity to make an oral presentation of their work. Also, the paper must be able to stand on its own, though it need not be a final draft. Submitted papers must fall under at least one of the Centre’s Research Axes. We ask that all papers include a bibliography.

The first student workshop was held on October 23, 2009. Three papers were discussed:

Andrea Carisse (M.A. Student, Communication). “The Representation of Female Olympians by NBC from 1996-2008: A Review of Literature”.
Matias Golob (Ph.D. Student, Human Kinetics). “Correlations between policy discourse and leisure constraints among ethnic minorities: A case study of recent arrivals to Canada”.
Ezechiel Rothschild-Checroune (M.A. Student, Human Kinetics). “Serious Leisure Communities of Practice: A Focus on Academic Engagement”.
